The arrests came after a breakthrough by a task team established by the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Riah Phiyega. The team was tasked with an investigation into allegations that SAPS jobs were being exchanged for money.

“The team arrested a woman, Gwendoline Moletje (39) on a warrant of arrest. Moletje, a security guard at the SAPS Head Office in Pretoria, allegedly promised young unsuspecting job-seekers that she would secure them work in the SAPS for a fee of between R2000 and R5000,” said Makgale.

Makgale said Moletje worked with two men who impersonated police officers:

“Both these men allegedly impersonated police officers, using the rank of Captain and several falsified surnames and also allegedly misled young hopefuls into believing that if they paid the stipulated amount of money, they would secure employment in the SAPS,” he said.

“Furthermore, this trio also allegedly promised a school that they would assist in erasing a substantial utility bill owed by the school to the Tshwane Municipality for a fee.”

Phiyega warned against accepting jobs illegally as 5000 entry level SAPS posts are expected to be advertised.
