With spring in the air, many South Africans are turning their attention to fresh starts and seasonal clean-ups. The Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), is encouraging motorists not to forget one of their most valuable assets – their car.

“Just like our homes, our cars need a spring clean too,” says Dewald Ranft, Chairman of MIWA. “After the colder months, a seasonal refresh helps remove the build-up of dirt and grime, improves efficiency, and ensures your vehicle is ready for the warmer months ahead.”
Here are MIWA’s top tips for a spring-ready car:
• Inside matters: Clean carpets, seats and dashboards to remove dust and allergens. Replace your cabin air filter to reduce pollen and improve air quality – especially important for hay fever sufferers.
• Fresh air: Get your air conditioning serviced. A clean system runs more efficiently and improves comfort on warmer days.
• Clear vision: Check wiper blades and top up washer fluid. Sudden spring showers are common, and good visibility is critical.
• Healthy tyres: Inspect tyres for uneven wear, cracks, or low tread. Rotate them if needed and make sure they’re correctly inflated.
• Under the bonnet: Have your oil, coolant and brake fluid checked at a MIWA-accredited workshop to keep your engine performing smoothly.
• Exterior care: Wash off winter grime, polish to protect paintwork, and don’t forget to clean undercarriages and wheel arches where dirt accumulates.
Ranft says a seasonal car check also prevents small issues from turning into costly repairs. “A quick service or inspection now can highlight problems early. It’s a smart way to keep your vehicle safe, reliable, and performing at its best.”
He adds that using a MIWA-accredited workshop offers peace of mind. “Our members adhere to high standards, employ qualified staff, and use the right parts and procedures. That means motorists can trust that their cars are in expert hands.”
“This spring, give your car the same attention you give your home. It’s a small investment of time and effort that pays off in safety, savings, and peace of mind,” Ranft concludes.
