June 2025 – The days are getting shorter as the cold weather sets in across South Africa. The perfect way to beat the winter blues is to cosy up with your bestie, loved one or family for a few hours in the darkened excitement of a cinema, to watch or rewatch some of your favourite classic movie titles. And, with the ticket price at just R50, Throwback Cinema should be a weekly event in your diary!
“Our Throwback Cinema titles continue to perform well and are proving to be a very popular option to watch some classic movies again on the big screen. The June line-up includes two iconic films from the 1960s that feature some big stars, and which we are sure our audiences will enjoy, either as repeat viewing or for a first-time cinema experience,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer at Ster-Kinekor Theatres.
First up, releasing on 06 June is the timeless classic from the 1960s, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, starring the beautiful classical actress, Audrey Hepburn. She plays the lead role of Holly Golightly, an eccentric New York City playgirl determined to marry a Brazilian millionaire. But when young writer Paul Varjak moves into her apartment building, her past threatens to get in their way. Directed by Blake Edwards, the film also stars George Peppard and Patricia Neal, and won two Oscars for composer Henry Mancini – one for Best Music, Original Song with Johnny Mercer for “Moon River”, and the second for Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture.

If you’ve ever wondered how long it takes to lose a guy, the Throwback Cinema movie releasing on Friday 13 June (lucky for some?!) is for you! How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is the 2003 romantic comedy starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Adam Goldbert and Kathryn Hahn, and directed by Donald Petrie. Benjamin Barry is an advertising executive and ladies’ man who, in trying to win a big campaign, makes a bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days.
One of them is lying. So is the other.

If psychological horror is more your genre, and you haven’t yet watched it, this 1960s classic is for you. Directed by the award-winning master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho stars Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles and John Gavin. When larcenous real estate clerk Marion Crane goes on the run with a wad of cash and hopes of starting a new life, she ends up at the notorious Bates Motel, where manager Norman Bates cares for his housebound mother. The film releases on 20 June.

Audiences are in for a treat from Friday 27 June with the release of two films that will appeal to very different audiences. The lovable green giant is back in Shrek 2, the animated fairytale first released in 2004. Releasing at all the Throwback Cinema sites except Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg, the popular sequel follows Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey as they set off to Far, Far Away to meet Fiona’s mother and father, the Queen and King. But not everyone is happily ever after. Shrek and the King find it difficult to get along, and there’s tension in the marriage. The Fairy Godmother discovers that Fiona has married Shrek instead of her son Prince Charming and plots to destroy their marriage. Directed by Andrew Adamson, Kelly Asbury and Conrad Vernon, the main characters are voiced by Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Julie Andrews, John Cleese, Antonio Banderas, Rupert Everett and Jennifer Saunders.

At Rosebank Nouveau, from 27 June, film lovers can enjoy a very different kind of love from a very different era, with the screening of the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, based on the much-loved novel by Jane Austen. When Elizabeth Bennet meets the handsome Mr Darcy, she believes he is the last man she could ever marry, but as their lives become intertwined, she finds herself captivated by the man she has sworn to hate forever. The film stars Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy, with supporting roles played by Brenda Blethyn, Donald Sutherland, Carey Mulligan, Rosamund Pike, Talulah Riley and Jena Malone.

July’s Throwback Cinema line-up promises even more hours of movie magic on the big screen with adventure, escapism, paradise island animation and comedy. From 04 July, you can play the game when Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle makes its big screen return. The following week, it’s the turn of the zoo animals on a paradise island in the 2008 Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, while the comedic antics of a young boy Home Alone: Lost in New York can be revisited in cinemas from 18 July. Sandra Bullock as Miss Congeniality rounds off July’s classic titles from 25 July.
At Rosebank Nouveau, cinemagoers can enjoy two very different but equally enthralling and enjoyable films releasing on 04 and 11 July respectively: There will be Blood, released in 2007, and another 1960s classic, My Fair Lady, based on the classic play, Pygmalion, from the pen of George Bernard Shaw, and starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison in the title roles.
