Unearthing value, building safer communities

Must read

Valterra Platinum, through its Community-Based Organisations (CBOs), reinforced its commitment to combating Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) by driving a coordinated, multi-province programme during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. The campaign brought together communities across Limpopo and the North West, demonstrating the impact of collaboration between industry, government, and civil society.

The company’s approach to addressing GBVF is rooted in the belief that safety begins with people, both within the organisation and in the communities it serves. Internally, employees participated in safety dialogues, awareness sessions, and the annual Keep It Safe Day, reflecting on personal responsibility, respectful behaviour, and everyday actions that help prevent violence and harm. These engagements equipped staff with practical tools to recognise early signs of abuse, support colleagues, and foster a safer workplace culture.

Externally, the network of CBO partners extends this commitment into high-risk communities. Through awareness campaigns, survivor support activities, school and clinic engagements, and partnerships with local leaders, these organisations helps families access services, encourages reporting, and creates safe spaces for difficult conversations. Together, these internal and external efforts reflect a shared dedication to accountability and building communities where every person feels protected and valued.

Strengthening action through shared learning

Building on the internal Keep It Safe Day held in October, the initiative drew on employees’ reflections on empathy, responsibility, and personal accountability. These insights have since informed community interventions across the company’s operational footprint, ensuring that the values nurtured within the workplace extend meaningfully into the broader communities it serves.

Collaboration as a catalyst for change

Working alongside partners such as SAPS, Social Development, the Department of Justice, and local stakeholders, Valterra Platinum supported a series of community engagements focused on prevention, awareness, and survivor support. Activities ranged from awareness dialogues and public marches to targeted sessions designed to engage men, strengthen local support systems, and improve access to essential services.

In Rustenburg and Phokeng, awareness drives and public engagements underscored the importance of strong referral systems, while in Mahwelereng, Seshego, Tubatse, Motodi, and Northam, the company’s CBOs partnered with local structures to amplify messages on safety, accountability, and available reporting pathways. These interventions aimed to create safe platforms for dialogue, increase visibility of survivor services, and encourage community members to take collective responsibility in addressing GBV.

A united commitment

Yvonne Mfolo, Executive Head: Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Valterra Platinum, said, “The fight against GBV is not just about awareness, it is about action, empathy, and unwavering support for our communities. We are deeply proud of our CBO partners and the tireless efforts of all stakeholders who continue to champion safety and dignity across our operational areas.”

Sustaining impact beyond 16 Days

Valterra Platinum remains committed to strengthening community structures, supporting justice pathways, and advancing long-term prevention strategies. The company will continue working with its CBO network and government partners to build environments where women, children, and vulnerable groups can live free from violence.
