Entrepreneurial Vision Enters the National Discourse

South African entrepreneur Sibusiso “Sbu September” Ngwenya, the visionary behind the SSS Cars project, an ambitious initiative to build the country’s first premium electric vehicle brand has seen his innovative concept mentioned in Parliament recently.
During a session of the National Assembly, EFF Member of Parliament Hon. Carl Niehaus tabled a Motion Without Notice calling for stronger government support for locally manufactured goods and homegrown innovation. Among the examples cited as proof of South Africa’s untapped potential were SSS Cars by Sibusiso September, Libra Phones from Soshanguve, and Lindiwe Sanitary Towels, all groundbreaking local ventures that have yet to receive sufficient institutional backing.
A Call for Local Procurement and Industrialisation
Hon. Niehaus emphasized the urgency of government departments, municipalities, and public entities prioritising local procurement as a tool for industrialisation, job creation, and inclusive economic development.
“Government procurement must be a tool for building our economy, not exporting opportunity,”
– Hon. Carl Niehaus, EFF MP
In his statement, Niehaus urged the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry, and Competition to strengthen its oversight over public procurement practices to ensure that locally manufactured goods such as the electric car prototype being developed by September’s SSS Cars — are prioritised and supported through government channels.
SSS Cars: Driving African Innovation Forward
Founded by the same creative force behind Skinny Sbu Socks, SSS Cars represents September’s evolution from fashion entrepreneur to industrial innovator. The initiative seeks to build South Africa’s first premium electric vehicle, designed, engineered, and assembled locally.
With a focus on sustainability, technology, and youth employment, the project embodies the type of innovation that could redefine South Africa’s role in the global automotive industry. September has publicly expressed his mission to “electrify Africa” through affordable, aspirational mobility solutions made by South Africans, for South Africans.
A Defining Moment for Local Entrepreneurs
The recognition of SSS Cars in Parliament marks a significant milestone not only for Sibusiso September but also for the broader ecosystem of local creators and manufacturers striving to build global brands from South African soil.
September welcomed the mention with humility and determination, noting that,
“This is bigger than me, it’s about proving that African innovation can compete on the world stage when given the right support. SSS Cars is a statement of belief in what our people can build.”
