South Africa, May 2025 – adidas is excited to announce the release of the second episode of their brand campaign, ‘Plus One Effect’. The six-part series explores the stories of athletes and the vital role of their ‘Plus Ones’, the supporters who shaped their journeys from the sideline. Their presence changes the game, turning doubt into confidence and pressure into joy.

Building on the success of the 2024 ‘You Got This’ launch, the 2025 campaign highlights the power of encouragement, revealing that 4 in 5 athletes face unhelpful sideline behavior, which can lead them to leave sports. Rooted in the universal truth that every athlete needs someone in their corner, the campaign highlights how a strong support system can be the difference between success and self-doubt.
In this episode, adidas spotlights 20-year-old winger Relebohile Mofokeng, one of South Africa’s brightest young footballers, making waves on and off the pitch. Known for his skill, humility, and heart, Rele’s journey began in the streets of Soweto, where football wasn’t just a pastime – for him, it was a way of life. From his backyard to the school fields, from Kasi tournaments to packed stadiums, Rele has always had a ball at his feet and a dream in his heart with the unwavering support from his parents, Naomi and Sechaba.
His talent was evident early on, earning him a place at the prestigious SAFA Transnet School of Excellence, where his technical ability and discipline began to shine. From there, his potential was quickly spotted by Orlando Pirates scouts. He joined the club ahead of the 2022/23 season and made his first-team debut just months after starring in the Club’s DStv Diski Challenge. Now in his second season with the Buccaneers, Rele has quickly become a fan favourite, known for his composure, pace, and creativity on the ball. His rise hasn’t stopped there – he’s also proudly represented South Africa for two years at national level. Showing up with heart and hunger in every cap, he’s focused on making his mark on the continental stage.
What sets Rele’s story apart is the unwavering support of his parents, who’ve been in his corner from the very beginning. “Having both my parents by my side is a privilege,” says Rele. “They motivate and encourage me, and they’ve always believed in me – through the wins and the losses. I want to make them proud, because they’ve always been there for me, and I’ll always be there for them.”
Behind every goal and every game is a home built on love, honesty, and strong principles. Rele’s mother, Naomi, has been his anchor – motivating, grounding, and guiding him with quiet strength. That bond, built on mutual respect and unwavering love, is what fuels his fire to succeed.
“The hardest decision I ever made was sending Rele to boarding school when he was just 13,” his mother Naomi shares. “He could’ve stayed in our kasi and gone to a local school, but I knew the right opportunities were further away. I only saw him once a month for five years. It broke me, but it is a sacrifice I had to make so he could have a better future.”
Now, as he chases greatness in South African football, Rele stays grounded by remembering his roots. As his mother Naomi says, “When you know where you come from, you know where you’re going.” Rele adds, “I want a better future for myself and my family.”
‘Plus One’ is more than an adidas global campaign; it’s a tribute to the people who make every win possible. adidas aims to spark a global movement of positivity, reminding every athlete that belief starts from the sidelines. After all, we all need someone to make us believe… you got this!
