July 2025 – It’s ‘me time’ for kids as they enjoy the mid-year school holiday – and that means movie time! Ster-Kinekor’s cinema screens are alive with all kinds of weird and wonderful creatures, and some of your best friends, too, from flying dragons and dinosaurs to superheroes and, who promise non-stop, big screen entertainment to keep the holiday boredom far away.

With films showing in Ster-Kinekor’s colourful and fun-filled Kids’ Cinemas, to the immersive IMAX experience, Cine Prestige and D-Box at select sites, which movie to watch when, and in which entertainment format, are the only decisions you need to make for the best movie experiences on the big screen.

Already showing on the big screen are some firm family favourites including How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch and Elio, and F1, Filmed For IMAX®, for the older kids (age restriction 13) who want speed and non-stop action!
You can also revisit your favourite animal friends from the jungle in the South African-produced animated film, Jungle Beat 2: The Past, to see what happens when the animals fall through a time portal that the aliens forgot to close. To return to the future, the friends will need the help of the dinosaurs, but these ancient lizards have their own problems. After all, their world is about to be invaded by cave aliens armed with clubs – watch out!

If lifelike dinosaurs from the Jurassic era are more to your liking, don’t miss the much-anticipated release of Jurassic World Rebirth in 3D from 04 July. Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, covert operations expert Zora Bennett is contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three largest dinosaurs. (Age restriction: 13)
Ster-Kinekor hasn’t forgotten the pre-schoolers either! They will love Peppa Meets the Baby Cinema Experience, a one-hour special on the big screen at select sites, for all those little Peppa Pig fans. Join Peppa Pig and her family as they get ready for their biggest adventure yet: welcoming a new baby!
The new Smurfs movie, which releases on 11 July, is sure to make you smile! When Papa Smurf is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette, voiced by Rihanna, leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe.
Bringing these delightful characters closer to home, don’t miss out on the interactive Smurfs Costume Character Roadshow, which takes place at different Ster-Kinekor cinemas across the country during July, ending at Ster-Kinekor Mall of Africa on 20 July. And, if you are in Johannesburg, catch them on 11 July for a special show from 10:30 till 13:30 at Ster-Kinekor Cresta, the day the movie releases.
One of our favourite superheroes is also getting ready to swoop down and make his appearance on the biggest screen, with the release of the new Superman movie, Filmed for IMAX®, also on 11 July. Superman, played by David Corenswet, is a cub reporter in Metropolis. He embarks on a journey to reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent. As the embodiment of truth, justice and the human way, he soon finds himself in a world that views these values as somewhat old-fashioned. (Age restriction: 13)
If you haven’t seen these animation favourites yet, now is your chance to catch up on two from the past with Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema special deal at select sites. With tickets at only R50 (Monday to Thursday), don’t miss Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa that returns to the big screen from 11 July.
While all the kids’ movies will be playing in select cinemas across the country, the younger kids will love the fun-filled Kids Cinema featuring its own foyer area with activity tables and catering counter, brightly coloured beanbag seats (with bigger seats at the back!), and a slide and ball pool. The Kids Cinemas can be found at Ster-Kinekor Sandton City, Fourways Mall, Carnival City and Irene (opening soon) in Gauteng, and at V&A Waterfront and Capegate in Cape Town.
Younger cinemagoers can also make the most of the loyalty programmes on offer for great value, with free movies until 19:00 for under-18s who are Discovery Vitality members, and The Epic Deal for SK Club members (free sign-up) that gets you a movie ticket, drink and popcorn for just R149,90 between Mondays and Thursdays.
