“Eskom Board and Chairman Zola Tsotsi have this morning agreed to part ways amicably. Dr Ben Ngubane has been appointed Acting Chairman,” Eskom said in a tweet.

The power utility’s board said it had reached a mutual agreement with Tsotsi after deliberating a motion of no confidence.

Earlier this month, Tsotsi suspended four senior executives at Eskom including CEO Tshediso Matona.

Eskom also tweeted that acting chairperson Ben Ngubane thanked Tsotsi for the selfless decision he took in placing the interests of the company first.

Eskom said in a statement that the board, after much deliberation, on Tuesday accepted the presentation made by Tsotsi.

“The board and the chairperson thereafter held a constructive discussion about charting a way forward for the power utility.

“Following this discussion, Tsotsi agreed to step down as a director and chairperson of the board.”

Tsotsi indicated after the meeting that the board had unity of purpose and that his decision to step down was in the interest of the company and the country and was done in order to allow the board to focus on the core issues facing Eskom, according to the statement.

“This step, the board believes, will ensure that the Eskom can focus on the challenges facing it and sets the company on a new path to regain the confidence of all stakeholders concerned in ensuring the important work of meeting the energy needs of the country,” Eskom said.
