Must read

Johannesburg, May 2025: Eastgate shopping centre in Johannesburg has become home to an innovative new learning hub, Learnergy, marking the first of its kind in South Africa. Now open, Learnergy will provide academic support, skill development, technological and psycho-social resources to students of all ages, reinforcing the centre’s role as a destination that super-serves its youthful shopper base.

Holistic approach to education

Learnergy’s name is a fusion of “learning” and “energy,” embodying its dynamic approach to education. The centre is spearheaded by Ntsako Mhlanga, a social entrepreneur and education advocate whose work has significantly influenced the education sector. Mhlanga, a former learner at nearby Jeppe High School for Girls, has dedicated her career to improving educational opportunities for young South Africans. Her initiatives have led to the provision of mobile classrooms in Limpopo, the development of school libraries, and the production of educational documentaries aimed at improving academic performance.

Located on the rooftop of the Office Tower next to Virgin Active, Learnergy offers learners access to tutors, teachers, textbooks, and reading materials to support their studies. The centre also provides extracurricular programmes, ranging from entrepreneurship and robotics to social media and job-seeking skills. Learners have the option to schedule private sessions for personalised support, ensuring tailored assistance that meets their individual needs.

Digital tools, student and teach well-being support

Additional to academic support, Learnergy offers access to digital learning tools, complimentary Wi-Fi and educational software in partnership with Vodacom e-School. Each learner will receive a device to access online educational content, bridging the digital divide and enhancing their learning experience. The centre also features a mobile iPad lab aligned with the South African school curriculum.

With its comprehensive approach to education, Learnergy will serve as a valuable resource for learners, parents and educators alike. On top of to its academic offerings, Learnergy provides wellbeing support services, with educational psychologists available for consultations and assessments to help identify learning challenges. Teachers can benefit from professional development opportunities through SACE-endorsed training modules, ensuring ongoing mentorship and support to sustain high-quality teaching standards.

Saadiyah Kahn, General Manager at Eastgate Shopping Centre, expressed enthusiasm for the launch of Learnergy, stating: “Education is a vital foundation to setting youth up for a promising future and Eastgate is proud to play a role in supporting young learners. Learnergy will provide a safe space where learners can access the tools, guidance, and support they need to thrive. As Eastgate continues to evolve as a hub for both retail and community-driven initiatives, this initiative aligns with our commitment to making a meaningful impact within our community.”

Learnergy is now open 6 days a week Monday to Saturday. Monday to Friday from 9am-7pm and Saturday from 8am-1pm. Prices start from R350 per hour for homework support. Walk-ins are welcomed to the public and parents and accommodates learners from Grade 1 – Grade 12.
