Brazil still traumatised by Germany

Brazil defender Maxwell has admitted that his side’s 7-1 thrashing against Germany in midweek contributed to their 3-0 loss to Netherlands on Saturday.

The Selecao had been favourites to claim World Cup glory on home soil but were stopped in their tracks in the last four by Joachim Low’s side, before losing to the Dutch in the third place play-off.

And the full-back says the humiliation they suffered at the hands of die Mannschaft still weighed heavily on their minds on Saturday.

“The last match was a catastrophe. Germany were very well positioned and we conceded quickly, which destabilised us,” the Paris Saint-Germain full-back told SporTV.

“We came into the pitch today with the trauma from last time and it wasn’t easy to go behind so early against a very organised team.

“We tried. We didn’t show much tactical organisation, but great heart. We know that we didn’t do what the coached asked at some points, but we showed guts on the pitch, fighting until the end and trying to get the result.

“So we have to take the many lessons after two defeats and try to move on. I think it’s time to reflect on some things. Every one us will take individual conclusions from this.

“But we can’t erase the good things that we built too. But certainly these last two defeats give us something to learn from.”
