its Khulanathi Programme
Marriott International is investing in the future of South Africa’s hospitality sector through its Khulanathi Leadership Development Programme, designed to fast-track talented individuals into leadership roles and bridge the gender and equity gap in the tourism industry. The company recently celebrated the graduation of its 2025 cohort while ushering in the fifth group of participants.

Khulanathi, meaning “grow with us,” runs over 12 months and blends academic learning with practical workplace experience. Participants complete a six-month management course run by the University of Stellenbosch Business School Executive Development (Pty) Ltd, followed by Marriott’s internal curriculum of mentorship, cross-functional exposure, and General Manager shadowing. The programme equips participants with the skills, confidence, and hands-on experience needed to step into leadership roles across hotels in Marriott International’s South African portfolio.
“As South Africa’s hospitality industry evolves, developing a pipeline of diverse and capable leaders is critical to creating an inclusive and thriving sector,” says Johan Cronje, Regional Vice President, Sub-Saharan Africa, Marriott International. “The Khulanathi Programme gives talented individuals the tools, experience, and support to step confidently into leadership roles and drive meaningful change.”
Graduates Making Their Mark
Since its inception in 2021, 37 Marriott employees have graduated from the programme, many of whom have moved into management positions. The fifth cohort, comprising 12 employees, continues Marriott’s commitment to developing talent from within and supporting the sector’s transformation agenda.
Among this year’s graduates are Sithembiso Mkubukeli, Front Office Manager at Johannesburg Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch, and Bradley Alexander, Junior Accountant at AC Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Waterfront.
Mkubukeli says: “The Khulanathi Programme has been a defining chapter in my leadership journey. It provided me with the strategic insight, mentorship, and cross-disciplinary exposure I needed to grow both professionally and personally. I leave the programme with a renewed sense of purpose, empowered to lead with confidence and contribute meaningfully to Marriott’s continued success.”
Alexander adds: “The programme deepened my personal mastery and leadership, enhanced my understanding of how business works and improved my communication skills, all of which have strengthened my performance as a junior accountant by enabling me to think more strategically, collaborate effectively with my colleagues and contribute confidently. These experiences have laid a strong foundation for my growth into a future leader.”
