Music Group The World of Birds have officially launched their debut EP ‘Before The Sun Comes Up

Well-known music group The World of Birds have officially launched their debut EP ‘Before The Sun Comes Up’ in collaboration with Durban-based singer and songwriter Red Robyn. They have already released two singles off this five-track EP. Their first release was a single titled, “Somebody to you”,  and landed on some of the biggest stations across South Africa including charting on the Algoa FM Top 30.

The World of Birds is made up of Nic Preen as the lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter, and producer brothers Benjamin and Conor McCarthy on keyboard and drums respectively. Red Robyn has done all of the female vocals, as well as on their 2019 track called ‘2020’, which served as an uncanny prophecy for social distancing owing to the lyrics ‘in 2020 you might miss me’.

The birds (as they quirkily refer to themselves) have coined their own unique genre which they call ‘new nostalgia pop’. With their shared drive towards this distinct sound, they describe the EP as ‘inherently feel-good and celebratory, but still down to earth in its authenticity’.

This follows their successful 9-track mixtape called ‘Double Happiness’, which illustrated the group’s keen talent for variety and experimentation, while still offering listeners a sense of familiar comfort.

‘Before The Sun Comes Up’ expands on this laid-back pop sound with unpretentious and natural lyrics sung with an effortless and accessible cadence. About this, Red Robyn says, “We want the listener to always feel a sense of happiness and surety when reflecting on the past and facing uncertainties about the future.”

The World of Birds have toured in South Africa and Europe, opened for and shared a stage with the likes of Goodluck, Goldfish and Beatenberg, and garnered crowds on the main stage at Rocking the Daisies, Corona Sunsets, Ultra and more.

Nic says, “We want as many people to hear our music as possible in order to visit them in turn and see as much of our world as we can through live music experience.”

They’ve certainly caught the worm with their early success, and now it is clearly time for the birds to spread their wings and soar.
