SA boys to be repatriated from Brazil

Two South African boys will be repatriated from Brazil after their mother was arrested for drug trafficking, the social development department said on Wednesday.

“It is understood that while in Brazil, the mother was recruited into trafficking drugs between Brazil and Portugal,” spokeswoman Lumka Oliphant said in statement.

“She was arrested in Portugal where she is currently incarcerated awaiting trial.”

The boys, aged seven and 13, were left in Brazil and were found living on the streets of Sao Paulo. Brazilian authorities referred them to the South African embassy in that country.

Between 2008 and 2014, the South African government repatriated 18 South African children found in distress in foreign countries, Oliphant said.

The two boys would be placed in the care of foster parents nominated by their mother. They were expected to arrive on Thursday morning.
