More ANC members and former luminaries of the ruling party have joined the growing number of people calling for President Jacob Zuma’s resignation.

A press conference was held on Wednesday, at the steps of the Constitutional Court to call for Zuma to resign and for a new president who would listen to the call of the poor.

This follows the Constitutional Court unanimous judgment last week that found the president had breached the constitution when failing to implement the findings of the public protector’s report on his Nkandla home upgrades.

Among those who attended a gathering at Constitutional Hill on Wednesday to call for Zuma to step down were former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils‚ former deputy ANC secretary general Cheryl Carolus‚ former head of the ANC Youth League Ronald Lamola and former Cosatu secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi.

A former Constitutional Court judge‚ Zak Yacoob and the founder of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC)‚ Mark Heywood‚ were also among a group of civil society members‚ church leaders and former ANC politicians at the press conference for call of Zuma’s resignation.

Former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said the country was going through a constitutional crisis and South Africans had a responsibility to defend the Constitution.

Vavi said a thief should not be replaced by another thief.
